Why you need these seven
Any UK employer of more than one or two people needs these documents. Some are legally required (like a written statement of particulars within two months of hiring, under the Employment Rights Act 1996). Others are practically required — HMRC, ACAS, employment tribunals and Home Office investigators all expect to see them, and the absence of a compliant grievance or disciplinary policy can increase tribunal awards by up to 25% under the ACAS Code of Practice.
Most employers cobble these together from old contracts, Googled templates, or out-of-date Word files a friend shared. That worked before UK GDPR, before the 2024 holiday pay changes, before Right to Work digital checks. It doesn’t work now.
